Anal itching (pruritus ani) is a symptom, not a disease, and it may appear in different cases. This problem is common and affects 5% of people during their lifetime.

Anal itching may be secondary to diseases affecting the skin, such as psoriasis, or it may result from various infections (infections) of viruses, parasites and fungi. One of the most common ways of infection is sexual relations.

Diabetes may be a cause of anal itching, as well as cases in which it is difficult to maintain the cleanliness of the area, such as cases of chronic diarrhea or lack of control of the anal opening. An important cause of chronic itch is cancer in that area. Therefore, although this cancer is rare, it is necessary to go to a medical examination when itching appears.

In many cases, the cause of the itch cannot be known. There are many different hypotheses, from excessive caffeine consumption to psychosomatic disorders.

Thanks to advanced and intelligent examinations of the mechanism of the anal opening, it was found, in many cases in which the cause of the itching was not known, that the true cause of itching was the leakage of a small amount of stool due to a slight defect in the functioning of the anal sphincter. The leakage, if the skin is particularly sensitive, caused anal itching.
